Thursday, January 17, 2008 Orr Responds to the News and Observer’s Under the Dome Complaint of Citing the Constitution in the Campaign ((Raleigh, NC) Tuesday, January 17th, Justice Robert Orr, Republican candidate for Governor, issued the following statement in response to an Under the Dome complaint that he excessively cites the Constitution on the campaign trail and in debates. Ryan Teague Beckwith, noted blogger for the News and Observer’s Under the Dome blog, commented today that Orr has had an excessive propensity to cite the Constitution on his campaign trail. He then specifically referred to Orr’s comment during last week’s UNC-TV debate in the context of the Constitutional requirement for a balanced state budget. Justice Orr’s response is best summarized as follows: “Let the Constitution be taught in schools, in seminaries, and in colleges, let it be written in primers, in spelling books, and in almanacs, let it be preached from the pulpit, proclaimed in legislative halls, and enforced in courts of justice. And, in short, let it be the political religion of the nation.” Abraham Lincoln ### |
